Tax Deadline is April 17 for the 2007 Tax Season

Madison – The federal Internal Revenue Service recently announced a change to the tax deadline date due to a federal holiday. As a result, the State's deadline to file taxes will also be Tuesday, April 17, for the 2007 tax season, according to the Department of Revenue.

The traditional “Tax Day”, April 15, falls on a Sunday. April 16, 2007, is Emancipation Day in the District of Columbia, thus an observed federal holiday. The Department of Revenue follows suit when the IRS extends tax filing due dates.

The Tuesday, April 17, 2007, deadline will apply to any of the following:

• 2006 state individual income tax returns, whether filed electronically or by paper (Forms 1, 1A, WI-Z, 1NPR)
• Requests for an automatic six-month tax-filing extension, whether filed electronically or by paper.
• Tax year 2006 balance due payments, whether filed electronically or by paper.
• Tax-year 2006 contributions to a Roth or traditional IRA.
• Individual estimated tax payments for the first quarter of 2007, whether paid electronically or by check.

Many taxpayers will not have to change their plans in response to this announcement. More than 80% of state taxpayers get a refund. Typically, returns claiming refunds are filed early in the season.
